Days 6 & 7 - Matsalu Matsalu is renowned as one of the most bird-rich places in Europe. Migration routes cross the region with tens of thousands of birds arriving to nest – an absolute birdwatcher´s paradise. The overhead passage of Cranes flighting in skeins stir one´s senses, while the evocative cackling of great flocks of geese as they take flight is one of the most magical sounds offered by nature. About 50 islands and islets can be found in the National Park area, most of these being located in the narrows of the sea. There are more than 10 small islands in Matsalu Bay, some of which are visible only when water levels are low. These islands are unparallelled as migration and nesting places for birds. In nearby Tuhu bog we may again see Black Grouse. By the time of the trip Bean Geese plus Whooper and Bewick´s Swans should be abundant. We remain ever vigilant for encounters with Elk, Deer or even Lynx! The first day is spent in in the south part of Matsalu and in the second we explore the northern aspect. In the evenings or early mornings we have opportunity to watch Eurasian Elk from one of the many observation towers, and from one located at Haeska we can also see Ruffs. We also visit Põgari-Sassi coastal meadow on Puise peninsula. Here we find a vast pasture dotted with pools that are highly attractive to waders. Rarities recorded include Ruddy Shelduck, Kentish Plover, Marsh Sandpiper and Crested Lark.Day 8 - Departure We return to Tallinn with time for roadside birding along the way, followed by the cultural experience at this historic city and our final dinner of the tour.
