Demoiselle Crane (Grus virgo), another rare visitor for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

On March 23, 2013, at 11:45 AM, during a routine survey around Durankulak and Shabla Lakes, the Bulgaria-U.S. team spotted a flock of 10 Demoiselles Cranes flying together with a single Common Crane, which provided some valuable comparison. The typical higher-pitched voice in flight was the Demoiselle Crane. A few hours later the birds were again successfully observed foraging in a cereal crop field near the Black Sea. They were cooperative enough, and the presented pictures were taken to confirm identification. By the late 1930s this crane species had become extinct in Bulgaria and Romania due to the conversion of steppes to agriculture. Let's hope that the endangered Red-breasted Geese will not go extinct due to misguided human activities! Photo by Pavel Simeonov (Branta Tours)
