Premier Waterfowl Rehabilitation Aviary in Bulgarian Coastal Dobrudga

On October 19, 2011 "Le Balkan-Bulgaria" Foundation and "Branta-Tours" celebrated the completion of the Premier Waterfowl Rehabilitation Aviary in Durankulak located immediately adjacent to the Branta Birding Lodge & Conservation Centre.

The construction of this aviary and rehabilitation facility is made possible by contributions from the Bettembourg regional group of the Luxembourg Bird Protection League (LNVL), the Italian factory "Cavatorta" and Albena-Tour LTD.

The celebration was attended by the Director of the Regional Inspection of the Environment in Varna, the Mayor of Shabla, the Director of the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research (IBER) in Sofia and 70 participants from the WETLANET conference (held in the top Black Sea Resort of "Albena"), including different scientists and wetland specialists.

A short presentation about the Red-breasted Goose Bulgaria-U.S.project was given during a reception at which time Le Balkan signed an agreement for joint activities with the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research (IBER) for the Waterfowl Experimental Captive Breeding Programme. Under this agreement a reproductive pair of Ruddy Shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea) will be transferred to the newly established aviary at Branta Conservation Centre from the "Kalimok" Biological Station on the Danube river.

The reintroduction programme aims to breed Ruddy Shelducks in Durankulak Aviary and to release fledglings into the wild. This species once was a native breeder in Durankulak and Shabla Lakes.

In winter, the aviary will be used for care and healing of sick and injured Red-breasted Geese and other rare or endangered waterfowl.
